About us

The beginning

La Baguette was opened in 1976 by Paul and Ruth Howse with the dream of bringing a little taste of France to Memphis. Originally from Mississippi, Ruth was a girl with a love of all things French. She studied at the Cordon Bleu and La Varenne Cooking Schools in Paris after she and Paul married in 1952. A student of both Julia Child and Jacques Pepin, Ruth shared her love of French cooking with her own students here in the Mid-South for many years.

La Baguette

Paul and Ruth worked with French pastry chefs on the original recipes, and those recipes are still the same today, enhanced by the expertise of many dedicated La Baguette employees over the years. An inspiration to all at La Baguette, Ruth passed away in 1998. Her family has continued her tradition of warmth, friendliness, and delicious food.

The bakery is now owned by Judd and David Tashie since March 2021. La Baguette has known some renovations but you can still find the same recipes and the same faces behind the counter!

La Baguette is a longtime favorite, with a loyal clientele, and an amazing staff - some of whom have been there since the beginning. In the heart of Memphis, right along Poplar Avenue, the bakery/café is perfectly situated for friends to pop in on their way to and from one part of town to another.

The indoor courtyard is a charming place to have lunch or breakfast, and a to go menu offers the same items for an easy pick up.

Of course, no meal is complete without a piece of bread or a dessert! Our freshly baked loaf, baguettes, petit fours, tarts, Napoleons, almond croissants, cookies, and other confections are culinary delight you will not want to miss.
